Angry name, SSAN, and DOB stolen from DVA computer

SPECIAL TREA LEGISLATIVE UPDATE - 5/22/2006

Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs Nicholson just completed a conference call with VSOs and MSOs regarding the theft of 26 million records, including names, SSANs, and DOBs.

The VA will make an announcement to the news media today that one of their analysts illegally took home data files that contained 26 million veterans records that included name, SSAN, and DOB, although no health and financial records were included). The analyst's home was burglarized and the records were taken. Nothing has been compromised yet. Secretary Nicholson has acknowledged the problem and has set up a hotline at 800-333-4636 to answer questions. Also, the web site www.firstgov.gov will have additional info. The VA cautions veterans to be extra careful in their financial dealings and records checking. Other federal agencies are aware of the breach and will be monitoring the situation.

As more information becomes available, we will let you know.

If you need a credit report, you can get one here:
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

As of 2004, the VA estimated there were 24.3 million living veterans so ISTM the 26M figure represents all of us plus a few spouses and a few deceased.
