Default Justifying Vocrehab to VA

I am a retired vet 22yrs...with a 70% rating...while living in one state, I applied and was approved for VOCREHAB (Have letter). When my temporary job ended, I had to relocate...while in transition..I gained a position with the federal govt.; the job requires or has federal (OPM) educational requirements i.e. BA/MA and requires IT security certifications. Wanted to ask the question: Would the VA allow me to complete these requirements or would I be forced to use GI Bill...
Looking for ammunition or any information or support would be greatly appreciated...thx

I'm currently an IT specialist with DoD. IT security certification, at least within DoD, is done by computer based training under one of the mil branch Knowledge Portals. We have a list of courses we're required to certify under. No one has yet said who is paying for independent testing.

Years ago, VocRehab used to allow for training in OJT type positions. We even had several of our firefighters write their own training plan. Having said that, things have changed. I haven't had any direct contact with VocRehab but my understanding is that these days, all of that is over and one must be unemployed to get it. The theory is; the purpose of VocRehab is to prepare disabled veterans to enter the workforce and if you are working, you don't need it. Additionally, most of the conversations I've participated in indicate your field of study isn't necessarily up to you. Supposedly they do job interest surveys and voc testing to determine fit and decide for you or at least have a chop on it. Also noted the rigidity of it depends a lot on the individual counselor. These guys are very involved in the process. After 'nam, it was wide open, no one cared. Ain't so any more but doesn't hurt to apply.

Here's another gotcha. Vocational Rehab and Emplovment (VRE) is 48 mos, GI Bill (GIB) is 36 mos. For every month of VRE used, subtract 1 mo of GIB. USE all your VRE and you have no GIB. I'm told the inverse isn't so.

Let us know how it goes so we can share with others.

I didn't realize that Chapter 31 had any effect on the GI Bill. You pay for the GI Bill while on active duty. That should be a completely different entity than VRE.

Yeah. Note the previous paragraph leads off with "Years ago". Long before your time. The Cold War GIB not MGIB. CWGIB was a gimmie. No one paid anything. Many older vets are still impacted by this as they studied under CWGIB. Contrary to popular opinion there was life before GWOT. We've had WWII GIB, CWGIB, MGIB as I remember.

You're right... being as clear as mud I should have seen the difference in what you were saying. I should have known "years ago" was a definitive abbreviation of ">30 years". Pardon my mistake.
