Trying to find help for my husband. This is all new to me so please bear with me. He was in the army 7/14/1998 - 04/01/1992 honorably discharged. Last year, he applied for health insurance through the VA. He was issued a Veterans Choice card in 10/2016. We are about 10 miles from a VA Outpatient clinic, so less than the 40 miles that I keep reading about. I've contacted the VCP help line numerous times. Keep getting different answers.

    1. If he needs to see a specialist(orthopedist) does he need to go to his primary care physician at the VA to get a referral?

    2. Where can I find current accurate information or a handbook regarding the VCP? I found one online but it's from 2013.

    3. He overdosed this past weekend on soma & morphine. He was taken to the closest ER in our town. Is there some way to get the VA to pay for the chest xray, CT scan, lab work, etc?

Sorry to sound ignorant about all of this. We are going through a very difficult time right now. He's been unemployed for 1 year because he is in physical pain due to 3 herniated discs...hence self medicating with soma & morphine(not rx'd) which lead to the ER visit. He's trying to find a job but cannot do much of anything physical. He's been to the VA recruiter but they don't seem to be much help.

Any advice you can offer I would very much appreciate. Thank you.

Also, we have a VA OUTPATIENT center 10 miles from our home but I was under the impression that the distance of 40 miles referred to an acutal VA HOSPITAL. Can anyone elaborate?
