PITTSFORD - In the foyer at Pittsford Town Hall is a plaque honoring the 20 soldiers from the community who died in combat in wars dating from World War I to the Vietnam War.

Their names are now engraved on a monument as part of a Veterans Memorial under construction in Port of Pittsford Park on North Main Street.

Plans are for the memorial to be dedicated during a ceremony on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

By all accounts, work is progressing on schedule.

Five members of the American Legion Rayson Miller Post serve with town officials on a committee that worked with architects and a construction company in designing the memorial, said Gary Stekloff, post commander.

"Most of them (the five) are World War II veterans," said Stekloff, a 67-year-old Vietnam-era Air Force veteran who spent time in Turkey and who served as a supply officer for a fighter wing. "They are very interested in the memorial. It gives them a shot in the arm."

Describing the significance of the memorial, Stekloff said: "It's a good feeling. It gives you a warm feeling that the town has recognized our veterans' service to our country."

The tree-shaded site is off the sidewalk near a path that leads down the hill to the banks of the Erie Canal.

The town received a $75,000 state grant earlier this year for the memorial project. The cost totals about $140,000.
