WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following is a release from Veterans for America:
Veterans for America strongly supports Senator Byrd's resolution introduced today, which states that Congress must approve any offensive military action by the United States against another nation.
In recent weeks, the Bush administration has taken steps that hint at the possibility of the war in Iraq being widened to include Iran. Before such action is undertaken, a full congressional debate must occur and legislative approval must be granted.
If the Iraq experience has taught the American people anything, it is that rushing into war can create severe long-term damage to our military. As Lt. Gen. David H. Petraeus, President Bush's nominee to serve as the top commander in Iraq, recently stated in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, "the Army is stretched and is straining..."
"At a time when our military is overstretched and our veterans poorly served, Congress must reassert the vital role it plays in decisions to use force. We congratulate Senator Byrd for, once again, making clear that the decision to go to war should be made only after the greatest consideration possible is given," said Bobby Muller, president of Veterans for America.
Veterans for America will be working in support of the Byrd resolution by, among other activities, encouraging veterans, as well as those currently serving in the military, to urge their elected representatives to co-sponsor the Byrd resolution.
Veterans for America (VFA), formerly the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation, co-founder of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize-winning campaign to ban landmines, is uniting a new generation of veterans with those from past wars to address the causes, conduct and consequences of war.
